| The owners of this home had ideas for a rectangular shaped building with a skillion roof and a central spine masonry wall running the full length of the building. This became a major feature of the building and has the added benefit of providing added thermal mass to the interior. This spine wall started as a 300mm thick rammed earth wall and eventually became face brick. The other walls are well insulated timber frame. The exterior cladding is a natural finish reconstituted timber and corrugated metal for both the warmth of timber and the low maintenance of the Colorbond Zincalume metal.
This simple rectangular shaped home incorporates all the passive solar design principles for year-round comfort. A large open plan living area facing north, including an outdoor undercover living space on the eastern end to capture early morning sun and northern sun throughout the day. Good cross ventilation with the building only 2 rooms deep. Minimal glazing facing west and east, but still allowing for natural light and ventilation. High levels of insulation in the ceiling space and walls. A concrete slab acting as thermal mass, and raking ceilings giving a feeling of open space. Double glazing to the living and main bedroom windows only, minimising costs but maximizing the energy rating outcome. The design was so successful it achieved and energy rating of 8.5 stars!
This is essentially a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom, study, outdoor living and double carport home meeting the client’s requirements for both energy efficiency and desired design features.
